Tory Leadership Contest: What Happens Next?

Boris Johnson is leading the pack - but the frontrunner doesn't always win.

The Conservative Party will have a new leader, and the country a new prime minister, within a matter of weeks.

On Sunday the contest ramped up as Channel 4 hosted the first TV leadership debate - which saw Boris Johnson empty-chaired after refusing to appear.

He was criticised by other contenders, including Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who said: “Where is Boris? If he can’t debate with five colleagues how could he negotiate with the heads of 27 member states?”

Rory Stewart remarked: “We’re choosing a prime minister and the public has the right to hear from us and judge who has the qualities to be prime minister.”

Last week’s first ballot saw Boris Johnson heavily in the lead.

Result of the first ballot

Boris Johnson: 114
Jeremy Hunt: 43
Michael Gove: 37
Dominic Raab: 27
Sajid Javid: 23
Matt Hancock: 20 (Dropped out)
Rory Stewart: 19
Andrea Leadsom: 11 (Eliminated)
Mark Harper: 10 (Eliminated)
Esther McVey: 9 (Eliminated)

This is how the next month will play out for Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt, Dominic Raab, Michael Gove, Sajid Javid and Rory Stewart.

Monday June 17 - Hustings

The candidates, other than Boris Johnson who has not agreed to appear, will face questions from political reporters in Westminster.

Tuesday June 18 - Second ballot

The candidates need 33 votes from Tory MPs to proceed to the next round. Any candidate that fails to reach this threshold will be eliminated from the contest.

At 8pm, Emily Maitlis will host a debate entitled Our Next Prime Minister on BBC One. Boris Johnson has agreed to take part.

Wednesday June 19 - Third ballot

The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. The results are announced at 6pm.

Thursday June 20 - Fourth and fifth ballots

These two ballots should see the contest whittled down to the final two. The 1922 Committee says it has provision for further ballots, but this is unlikely. The results are announced at 1pm and 6pm.

Saturday June 22 - Membership hustings

With two candidates, Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ) will begin the membership hustings process for party members.

There will be 16 leadership hustings hosted in every region and nation of the UK.

The first hustings will take place in Birmingham on Saturday 22 June. The final hustings will take place in London in the week commencing 15 July.

The campaign spending limit for each candidate is £150,000.

Week commencing July 22 - Winner announced

A new leader will be announced following the postal ballot of about 160,000 Conservative members.

Theresa May will then see the Queen to formally resign and the new leader will be invited to Buckingham Palace to form a government – possibly within hours of the leadership contest ending.
